5 rookie suit mistakes most men make

We have been showing you a lot of style tips for the formal (or semi-formal) suit. But, in today’s blog, let’s take a closer look into mistakes most men make when wearing a suit!

Rookie mistake 1: Over accessories

Everyone wants to look stylish, even on formal occasions. The right accessories can help you achieve this. But sometimes, even the best pieces of accessories couldn’t help you if you wear too many of them.

Picking the right pieces for your suit is a real art

When it comes to men accessories, we have pocket squares, tie bars, bracelets, watches, or even pocket watches. But all of these together? It’s a big big NO.

Pick a maximum of 3 accessories; don’t overcompensate by making them the boldest they can be. For formal events, pick a decent tie pin and a pocket square. And if it’s a semi-formal occasion, just a cool hand watch and a bracelet are enough to make you stand out of the crowd.

Rookie mistake 2: Untucked dress shirt

Dress shirts are meant to be tucked in. Dress shirts are designed with extra length so that they do not come untucked. So please, tuck in your dress shirt before going anywhere.

If you don’t like to tuck your shirt in, choose a different style to wear. But if you have to wear formal attire, choose a shirt style that has a shorter, casual cut.

Rookie mistake 3: Visible Undershirt

Your undershirt should never be visible because it is meant to be “under” - just like your underwear. If you like to leave some buttons undone, go for a V-neck undershirt.

Your undershirt should never be exposed like this

Rookie mistake 4: Dress shirt too baggy

This is probably the ultimate rookie mistake. A dress shirt that’s too large will make you look fatter, stumpier. Simply put, it’s not a good look at all.

Make sure that your collar has no more than two fingers of room; the shoulder seams hit the edge of your shoulder.

These days, you can easily access to tons of affordable dress shirt that can satisfy your body type. So, don’t make any excuses and start picking the right dress shirt for you.

Rookie mistake 5: Too much of matching details

We know that there is one golden rule when it comes to how to dress nicely: matching details. But too matchy-matchy is a no go.

Honestly, we’re not sure why stores still sell matching tie and pocket square sets. Wearing a tie and pocket square cut from the exact same fabric will make your outfit look contrived and overdone.

Of course, there’s no issue with buying a matching set at all, we still recommend never wearing both pieces at the same time.

Instead, choose a pocket square complements your tie but doesn’t match too closely. When in doubt, a simple white square is the best.

You never talked about shoe type dress or casual, which can make or break the look.

I agree with some of your advice, but not all.

You’re on point for most of this. However, matching the tie to the pocket square can greatly compliment the shoes. Having a different tie and pocket square may throw off the look depending on how your wearing the suit and the shoe color and style. Not that it can’t be done alot. I just don’t think it is a set in stone rule to dismiss matching the tie with the pocket square.
